Adelaide Ward, who taught English at Dunbar Vocational High School for many years and had a knack for getting through to even the most stubborn of students, one day turned to the school's principal to help solve a conundrum. "She was teaching a class of senior boys, many of them quite bright, who had all stopped handing in their homework," said Richard Stephenson, the Bronzeville school's principal from 1971 to 1988. "I think they felt it was no longer cool to do well in school." Ward brought Stephenson into her classroom, and after a frank talk with the students, he pointed out the window to his car in the parking lot. He told the boys that if they wanted to succeed and drive a nice car like his someday, they needed to get with the program. "I remember seeing that slow smile come across her face, when weeks later we were discussing how well the boys were doing after I'd spoken with them," Stephenson recalled. "Adelaide made it seem like it was because of me, but she was the resourceful one.
She was the one that came up with the solution." Ward, 93, the former English department chair at Dunbar who retired in 1989 after 25 years at the school, died April 17, at Rush University Medical Center, after a stroke, family members said. A longtime resident of the Washington Heights and South Shore neighborhoods, Ward had been living at Brookdale in Olympia Fields, an assisted living facility, since October. "The great thing about Adelaide is that she could really read people, something that comes in handy as a teacher," Stephenson said. "Her communication went beyond words." The youngest of five, Ward was born Adelaide Frances James in Daytona Beach, Fla., on the campus of Bethune College (now Bethune-Cookman College). The family moved to Orangeburg, S.C., when her father joined the faculty of South Carolina State College. Ward later moved with her mother to Washington, D.C., where she attended a school — also named Dunbar High School. Ward graduated with honors from Howard University, where she also received a master's degree in history, family members said.
