Adelaide Ward, who taught English at Dunbar Vocational High School for many years and had a knack for getting through to even the most stubborn of students, one day turned to the school's principal to help solve a conundrum. "She was teaching a class of senior boys, many of them quite bright, who had all stopped handing in their homework," said Richard Stephenson, the Bronzeville school's principal from 1971 to 1988. "I think they felt it was no longer cool to do well in school." Ward brought Stephenson into her classroom, and after a frank talk with the students, he pointed out the window to his car in the parking lot. He told the boys that if they wanted to succeed and drive a nice car like his someday, they needed to get with the program. "I remember seeing that slow smile come across her face, when weeks later we were discussing how well the boys were doing after I'd spoken with them," Stephenson recalled. "Adelaide made it seem like it was because of me, but she was the resourceful one.
