A Common Problem: This is a common problem for people. You buy a set of chairs one place, you buy a table in another, but the heights don't coordinate. Either the table is too tall or the chairs are too high (rubbing knees on a table, anyone?). Most people don't realize that you can adjust the height of your table or chairs quite easily within a span of a few inches using some very inexpensive products. Your Table is Too High: If the table is sitting too high, you have several options. One is to cut down the table leg, but this technique is quite permanent and could potentially damage the value of your piece. 

There are many different sizes & styles out there for chair risers. If you don't like the black or brown color they come standard in, you could always paint the risers a different color with a cheap can of spray paint.  A simple wood block could also be screwed up underneath the chair leg & then stained or painted to match your finish. Small wood blocks can be purchased at most big box hardware stores or even online at some woodworking sites that sell specialty wood products for furniture making. Caster are another option for chair legs to raise up the overall height of the chairs, but this is honestly not my favorite option. With 3 children at home, I know without a shadow of a doubt that they would be doing chair races down the hallway if we had casters on our dining chairs! Your Chairs Are Too High: If your chairs are too tall for your table, there are several ways to address this. Again, a more permanent option would be to cut down the length of your chair legs. As stated earlier, cutting on your furniture is permanent and likely to alter the value of your pieces.

Make sure your chairs don't already have risers on them. If they do, simply take them off. An inch or two really makes the difference. If you need a more specific size, you can always add small wood blocks or bun feet to your table legs, too. Again, you can purchase these at your local big box hardware stores or online woodworking sites. Pay attention to the diameter of your table legs, so that the riser is smaller in diameter. Otherwise, it will stick out & be more noticeable. Another option is to add casters to your table legs. This not only puts your table at a higher height, but also gives you versatility in your table usage & its location. Bringing It All Together: I hope these options have opened your eyes to the possibilities out there for adjusting table & chair heights. 

There are two simple things to remember. If your table is too high - look at extending the height of your chairs. If your chairs are too tall for your table - examine how you can make your table higher.
