Helps reduce pressure when user is in upright or reclined position Email to a FriendReplacing the foam in your recliner will give it new life. Your favorite recliner earned that honor by being the most comfortable chair in your home, but as with so many honors, it comes with a price. Time and use can break down and compress the foam that makes your special seat so comfy. While most people tend to trash a recliner when it starts to show signs of wear, that’s a waste of money and of a good chair. Replacing the foam is the least-expensive way to turn back the hands of time and make that recliner feel new again. Remove the seat cushion from the recliner. Measure the cushion at its thickest point, usually a corner. This will tell you what thickness of upholstery foam you will need. Measure the cushion from side to side at its widest point. Measure the cushion from front to back. These dimensions are the size of upholstery foam you will need. Examine the back of the cushion to see if it has a zipper.
If it does not, carefully open the bottom seam in the back by cutting through the stitches with a utility knife or seam ripper. Pull the old foam out of the cushion and discard it. Slip the new foam into the cover and either close the zipper or sew the back seam closed with a needle and thread and a blind stitch. Examine the recliner to see if it is possible to remove the arms without ruining the upholstery. If it is, do so. Either way, carefully slit one side of the upholstery as far down between the arm and the seat as you can.Measure the width, depth and height of the foam and cut a replacement piece to those measurements. Carefully work the new foam into the opening you made in the fabric between the chair seat and its arm. Close the opening with a blind stitch using a curved upholstery needle and heavy-duty thread. Replace the arm if you removed it. Things You Will Need Measuring tape Utility knife or seam ripper References ReStore: How to Reupholster
