How to Reupholster Your Tub Chair Select new upholstery fabric. If you aren't sure which fabric to choose, talk with the salesperson and explain what you intend to do with it. Usually, upholstery fabrics are thickly woven wools, cottons and polyesters that will stand up to repeated use. Wash and dry the fabric before use. Unscrew any leg pieces or feet from the bottom of the chair, then remove the old fabric. Try to do this as gently as possible so that you can use the original pieces of cloth as a template for your new cloth. Measure the length of existing piping. Cut into the fabric across the middle of the seat cushion vertically as far back as possible to reveal the inner cushions. Once the cut is long enough, you should be able to reach in and remove the thick, central cushion. Now the ends of the fabric and their fastening staples are exposed. Pick out the staples and remove each section of cloth carefully. Undo the sewing seams within large pieces so that you have several smaller pieces.
Next, take your replacement upholstery fabric and place it flat on a large, flat surface. Place the old pieces of upholstery on the new fabric, pin them into place and cut around each piece to create the same shape in the new fabric. Leave a seam allowance of 1-2 inches. Sew the new pieces together, starting with the center front and working out to both sides. Next, stitch the back pieces together and drape all of these onto the chair. Create new piping by cutting 2-inch strips on the bias and stitching them together on the diagonal edges. Fold these around cord and stitch together, leaving no wiggle room for the cord. Replace any foam pieces that were removed. If these were originally glued in place, use a foam glue to reattach them and allow it to dry before moving forward with the project. Tack the piping in place along the rough top edge of the back piece. Flip the center back piece over the front so that the good sides are facing and the piping is sandwiched at the edge.
Match the mid-points and pin along the entire edge. Take the pieces to the sewing machine and stitch together along the pins, starting in the center and working outward, one side at a time. Pin piping along the edge of each arm. Place front-facing arm pieces to the center-top point of the piping so that right sides of the arm pieces and main body are facing together. Pin in place and then stitch together along the length of piping on each arm. Staple the main body of fabric to the wooden frame in the center of the chair that is normally covered by the seat cushion. On the underside of the chair, staple the exterior edges of the fabric to the base. Staple the lower front panel into place both on the underside of the frame and along the interior frame. Place the final bottom piece of fabric on the underside of the chair, pressing the edges under. Screw the legs of the chair back on.
