This is a replacement kit for recaning a chair that has "pressed" cane in it, which means it must have a groove or channel around the area to be replaced. This kit will not be suitable for chairs that have drilled holes. A few household items will be needed to complete a finished seat such as a small amount of glue and a straight slot screwdriver. The kit includes a fresh, new piece of 18" square cane, 1 piece, #7 spline, or approx. 5.75 mm, which fits into the groove in the chair and holds the cane in place. 5 wood wedges and complete instructions. This kit will replace a seat up to 17" square. Please double check the photos provided to see if your chair is pressed cane.

The first photo shows what the chair seat should look like with the caning removed. There must be a groove or channel in the seat, not drilled holes. The next 2 photos show what the area should look like with caning installed - there should be a smooth strip or bead of spline around the outside edge of the seat. The size cane included in this kit is labeled as ** 1/2" open" which means there is 1/2" from center of one hold to the center of the next hole. If you are trying to match old caning, please check the pattern size before you order. Again - PLEASE double check the measurements for the area you are recaning, it can not be any larger than 17" square. Wrap the length of new cane snugly around the leg (Image 3), and add a dab of glue where it ends. Secure the end with another tack, and cut off any excess caning (Image 4). The technique for replacing a missing or broken strand of caning in the body of a wicker piece is similar to that described above.

Soak a length of wicker strand in water for about 30 minutes. With a utility knife, cut off any protruding ends of the old strand (Image 1), and if possible, glue the end to the underside of an intersecting piece of cane. Once the new strand has softened, cut off a section slightly longer than the length of the piece being replaced. Place a small amount of glue inside the woven strands. Tuck one end into the woven wicker, next to the broken strand, and begin weaving the new piece in the same pattern as the old (Image 2), using a pair of needle-nose pliers to assist if necessary. Once the new strand is in place, cut off any excess, and tuck the end underneath an intersecting piece. After you've completed the repairs and the glue has dried, spray-paint the repaired areas to match the rest of the piece. Apply a light coat of spray paint, blending carefully with the surrounding areas and using even sweeps of paint to achieve a professional look. For pieces that are to be used outdoors, use an exterior-enamel spray.
