The Furniture Bank’s mission is to distribute quality used furniture and household goods to Ottawa’s marginalized population including refugees, those transitioning from institutions, half-way houses, and shelters, along with others who have lost their possessions. Originally, Furniture Bank in Ottawa – as a service – was founded in 2008 following an influx of Haitian refugees. When rattan’s outer skin or peel is removed and cut into thin strips, the resulting material is called cane. It has a natural glossy finish and does not accept stain or paint well, but is considered most beautiful in its natural state. Bamboo resembles rattan and is often mistaken for it.
