Cushions add decoration for plain folding chairs. Making a simple cushion for a folding chair adds comfort to what typically is an uncomfortable seat. Metal folding chairs are convenient for when additional or temporary seating is needed for an occasion, but many of these folding seats are void of padding, making the seat hard and uncomfortable.

However, if you are making multiple cushions, the project is time consuming without the aid of a machine. Measure the seat of the chair front to back, then left to right using a measuring tape. Add 3 inches to each of the numbers. This is the cushion material's length and the width. Cut polyester or cotton-blend material to fit the measurements. Cut one piece of material to size, then use it as a pattern to cut a second matching piece.

Lay each cut piece facedown on a flat surface and create a 1-inch seam along one width side. Measure and fold the material over and pin it in place with sewing pins. Iron the fold flat with a warm iron, then sew down the fabric with a needle and thread or a sewing machine. Repeat the process on the second piece. Align the two pieces of material with the face sides together and the two seamed edges together. This leaves the three raw sides aligned. Measure 1 inch into the sides all the way around the raw edges and pin with sewing pins. Sew around the 1-inch markings with a sewing machine or needle and thread. Turn the forming cushion right-side out. You now essentially have three closed sides and one hemmed open side. Cut 2-inch-thick poly-fiber foam to the seat measurements using a utility knife, and wrap the foam with plastic wrap. The plastic wrap prevents the foam from flaking off into the cushion as it ages. Add prong-styled snaps to the open edge of the cushion every three inches.

Follow the package directions for application. Most snap together through the material. Slide the wrapped foam into the fabric pouch and snap it shut. Things You Will Need Measuring tape Polyester or cotton-blend material Sewing needles or sewing machine Poly-fiber padding, 2 inches thickFolding chairs come in handy for temporary, portable seating. Because they are typically made of metal or wood, however, they are not always the most comfortable seating option. You can make seat cushions for your folding chairs that will make them much more comfortable. These cushions can match any decor style and are removable to make folding the chair easier when it's not in use. All of the materials are available at your local fabric store. Step 1 Measure the length and width of the folding chair's seat. Step 2 Cut out a piece of decorative fabric that matches the width of the seat plus 2 inches and is twice the length plus 3 inches. For example, if the seat measures 12-by-12 inches, the fabric should measure 27-by-14 inches.

The extra fabric will allow for seams and the thickness of the pad. Step 3 Fold the fabric in half with the face inward, making it slightly larger than the seat size. Step 4 Sew seams along the right and left edges to join the fabric together. This closes three sides of the cushion when the folded edge is included. Step 5 Cut four 12-inch pieces of decorative cord that complements the cushion fabric. Step 6 Sew the ends of two cords to each corner next to the open side, extending away from the cushion. Step 7 Turn the cushion right side out so it resembles a bag with four cords extending from the open end. Step 8 Cut a piece of 1-inch upholstery foam to match the chair seat size. Slide this foam into the cushion fabric. Step 9 Close the open edge of fabric over the foam, pinning the seam with straight pins. The edges of the fabric should be tucked inside of the cushion. Step 10 Sew the final seam closed with a slip-stitch. Step 11 Place the cushion on the chair seat with the folded edge facing the front.
