Made from solid oak and veneer, it is very sturdy yet stylish. With it's soft closed drawers and metal base, it gives the range an industrial feel which is well worth a look!Chocolate Fish Cafe at Shelly Bay has a big lawn out front on which to relax, and plenty of room for the kids. "No parking on the grass" reads the sign before a lawn full of parked cars. But what choice does a prospective weekend customer of The Chocolate Fish Cafe have, when the official car park is packed?
racing office chair review Overseas visitors must be baffled that this venue – a rumpty former air force hut – could command such phenomenal popularity, especially as the multi-winged, multi-levelled, multi-court-yarded warren has never been properly renovated.

However, what a tourist might not understand, but which Chocolate Fish's middle-class Kiwi target market totally does get, is that such rumptiness is entirely intentional. If this cafe's name weren't obvious enough, the hand-painted rata branches on the school chairs reinforce Chocolate Fish's theme as Kiwiana. Consequently, everything – the service, dining etiquette, ambience – is all so laid back that it doesn't even matter if little Molly spews over the wallpaper, or that the waiters keep trying to offload smoothies you haven't ordered. *From the Menu: A beachside favourite *Life's a cabaret in Petone's newest cafe, The Seashore Cabaret *A Wellingtonian's guide to a packed weekend in Wellington *$500m revamp for Shelly Bay, Wellington Along with all the other Kiwiana-themed seaside cafes around Welly's coastline – Scorch-O-Rama, Maranui Cafe, Seashore Cabaret – Chocolate Fish plays to inverted snobbery and our national phobia of pretentiousness.

The cafe evokes every makeshift bach you've ever stayed in, with the sea out the front door and a big front lawn for the kids to run riot on funky home-made trikes. For the duration of a lunchtime at least, it's a taste of the Kiwi Dream most of us can no longer afford. There's Kiwiana on the menu too, largely in the form of kaimoana. Besides fish, it has whitebait, paua and even crayfish. A white bread sammy (cut family style, in half, and not on the bias) contained enough actual cray chunks to let you taste it. It does have a wine list, and while it's small, there are major incentives to indulge over lunchtime: the calibre of the labels (Te Mata, Peregrine, Saddleback), large wine glasses with high pour marks on the side and a set price of $10.50. It is counter service here and they don't issue table flags. So what with streams of customers drifting back and forth between the west wing, the east wing, the central avenue and various courtyards, it's no wonder the service can be confused.

Marinated fish, cut into overly teeny gobbets, had lain too long in its marinade, and while fresh, had turned raggy and leached its flavour into the deep puddle that had gathered at the bottom of the bowl. Corn chips proved every bit the discordant textural accompaniment they had seemed on paper. House-smoked salmon was OK, caught in the nick of time before it turned dry, only I found the glaze distractingly sweet. However, one of the many daily specials, grilled New Zealand scallops, miso dressing and Asian-style coleslaw of red and white cabbage, pickled ginger, veges and black sesame seeds did more or less live up to its splendid menu description. I don't see The Chocolate Fish's wooden building in the artist's impression of the proposed Shelly Bay apartment development revealed recently, so perhaps the time for a visit is limited. 100 Shelly Bay Rd, Shelly Bay ph: 388 2808 (no bookings taken weekends) Open 7 days, 8am till 5.30ish Price range of mains: $19-$23
