Ubiquitous den of violence and flim-flammery McDonald's has always been the haven of choice for urban and rural hobos alike. But with Starbucks moving aggressively to corner the hobo-gathering-place market, McDonald's is striking back with a billion-dollar hobo-attraction campaign of its own. USA Today, the McDonald's of newspapers, reports that McD's is about to drop a billion dollars to make itself look less like McD's. Goodbye, fiberglass tables and industrial steel chairs. Adios, neon-yellow, bright-red interiors. Hello, wooden tables, comfortable faux leather chairs and interiors newly painted in muted oranges, yellows and even subtle greens. It's all part of McD's plan to convince you to "stick around and tap into free Wi-Fi service as you sip a cappuccino." Next to a bunch of hobos who are also nursing a single cup of coffee while looking at online porn, at McDonald's. By luring these hobos away from Starbucks, McDonald's will be able to project a warm, inviting atmosphere to the many hobos prowling the streets.

"Come in, stay a while," says the new McDonald's decor. "Buy something from the value menu, kick back, clip your toenails, and share gossip about the best nearby soup kitchens with your fellow hobos." Most Americans can't afford fast food any more, but those prosperous enough to be considered "hobos" rather than "wretched beggars" can still scrape together a few bucks from panhandling. So last night my young buddy Andrea talked me into taking part in Floral Soil Design Nite at Starbucks.  Yeah, I had no idea what that would encompass, either. It turns out that creative entrepreneur Mickey Blake, of Floral Soil, has created a non-toxic, plant-based foam for florists to arrange cut flowers and foliage.

I couldn’t actually see how this would interest me, as I have no living plants in my home (my motto:  gift me a plant and see how quickly I can kill it) but the images on Mickey’s website of what we’d be creating—a “cake” of succulents and cut flowers—was so adorable I signed on right away.  I could just imagine all the compliments I’d be receiving with one of them as a centerpiece on my dining table. Mickey told us a bit about the history of Floral Soil and let us practice on a cupcake of the material before graduating to working with our cakes.  She showed us how to use chopsticks to create a hole for inserting the stem. We discussed how to wrap the design around the Floral Soil mold in a creative way while sipping tea and exchanging life stories.  Mickey was very encouraging, as in “that looks great, but maybe a smaller plant would look better right there.” As we created our masterpieces, it became clear even to me, with my limited home decorating talents, that this would be a fantastic way to incorporate brightness into a room and tie the decor together.  

Use colors that play nicely with the hue of your sofa bed and change the vibe of your living room.  Pull in some of the tones in the recliner over in the corner and suddenly your design scheme will look more intentional than haphazard. FINANCIAL DISTRICT — A quick Starbucks stop for some hot chocolate left this Kardashian out in the cold — without her $15,000 mink coat. Janetta Kardashian, who believes she is a distant relative of the famous Kardashian clan, had her $15,000 dark blue mink coat stolen as she sipped hot chocolate and ate a few cookies with her 7-year-old daughter in a Financial District Starbucks last month, police said. Kardashian, the owner of an online luxury vintage clothing boutique, NY Vintage Club, told DNAinfo New York that she placed her favorite fur on the back of her chair during the Feb. 18 snack break at the 195 Broadway Starbucks. When she and her daughter got up to leave at about 4 p.m, after sitting for 20 minutes, the pricey coat was gone. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Kardashian, 42. “Someone took it without me, my daughter, or anyone, noticing.” The loss of the fur coat, purchased from her native Russia two years ago, was a “pity,” she said, but she won’t “cry over things that won’t cry over me.”

The theft also only makes a small dent in her collection of furs. Kardashian, who ran a vintage boutique for more than 12 years in Midtown East that transitioned into an online venture two years ago, has more than 40 furs, she said — adding, "you should see my shoe collection." The longtime Midtown East resident said when she called the police they seemed a bit skeptical about whether the stolen mink was really worth $15,000 but then, she said "they saw my last name and they were just friendly." Starbucks did not immediately return a request for comment. Other notable crimes in the 1st Precinct include: ► A woman had her $28,000 engagement ring, $3,000 wedding ring, $2,000 white gold necklace and $2,000 emerald ring stolen while she worked out at the New York Health and Racquet Club at 39 Whitehall St. on Feb. 24, police said. The 43-year-old told police that she placed her jewelry in a small, cardboard box before working out, then locked it inside her locker, as is her usual routine.

When the woman came back from her workout, at about 8 a.m., she found her lock was still locked, but the box of jewelry was missing. ► A man had his $1,800 Lenovo laptop stolen from bar Killarney Rose, 127 Pearl St., on March 5 at about 7 p.m., police said. The 30-year-old told police he left his bag, which contained the computer, at his table, and when he returned after buying drinks, the bag was gone. ► A woman had her $800 brown leather Louis Vuitton shoulder bag stolen after accidentally leaving it at Duane Park Patisserie, 179 Duane St., on March 9 at about 3 p.m., police said. The 34-year-old told police that she left the bag on a countertop as she paid for her baked goods, then, distracted by her kids, she forgot to grab the bag on her way out. When she soon returned, the bag, which contained her $300 Louis Vuitton wallet, $150 Ray Ban sunglasses and $270 in cash, was missing. ► A woman had $3,750 worth of jewelry stolen while she shopped in SoHo on March 10, police said.
