Odds are, if you bring out a photo album—one of those tangible scrapbooks from which faded snapshots are falling—you'll come across an image or two of children in ill-fitting swimsuits lined up in a tiny, shallow pool on a lawn or deck. That bottle of beer next to him will help make the job and heat more tolerable. Dougal, a red heeler / lab mix chomps on an itch while letting his master borrow his pool. That's right—"We got the pool for the dog," says Dwyer. This pooch finds a way to beat the heat. Having played the "loyal dog" role long enough, Dougal, a red heeler / lab-mix puppy, takes over his kiddie pool as soon as his master steps away. An Austin heatwave in July of 2009 forced residents to find creative ways to cool off. That Austin heat is typical. "It gets blazing hot here in the summer," says Dwyer, "and Dougal and his canine friends love jumping in the pool to cool off after playing in the yard. Dougal will even lay down in it, hang his head out and take a little nap."

His first pool —the same model as the previous year—was part pool, part chew toy. He started chewing on it from day one and finally chewed through it, releasing all the water on Labor Day.
