We didn’t anticipate finding a collection of baby gasmasks so appealing – nor, for that matter, a pair of polio prosthetics – but, as we found ourselves inside the new warehouse from vintage and antiques collectors Apostlebird there was a strong sense of fascination with the metal juvenile legs dangling from the beams. Unlike the provincial French furniture dealers and the Rockabilly outfitters of the Inner West, this store has an air of something far more macabre. A number of antique chandeliers hang from the ceiling but their specialty is furniture, offering a wide variety of antique french, industrial and eastern pieces that the store sells, hires-out, buys, paints or upholsters. Don't let the name fool you. The items stacked haphazardly on the shelves at Dust are often in remarkably good condition - from old movie posters to mannequins to cane chairs. There’s more to this rustic French design store than exxy espadrilles, we assure you. Surry Hills French interiors store ici et là (it means ‘here and there’) has gathered a strong following for its collection of antique French deckchairs, zinc letters, industrial light shades and vibrant striped fabrics. It is rare to find a fine dining restaurant that caters so well towards kids but Papi Chulo certainly does.

From the gorgeous vintage high chair to the broad kids menu that doubles as a colouring in page, Olivia was well looked after so hubby and I could actually enjoy our meal. We started with some pea gucamole with the most delicious tortilla chips. For Olivia we ordered the cheese quesadilla but as she is currently conducting an experiment on whether a child can exist on carbs (i.e. potato chips) and carbs alone, the quesadilla was left for me to eat. The kids menu also gives the option of swapping the chips for peas, carrots and potato. I have a big issue with all the fried food that appears on kids menus so it is so refreshing to see a healthier option. If only my child would eat it… The kids meals are priced at $12 and are a really generous serve. Now the fun part, the adults food! It was hard to choose but we settled on the Ranger’s Valley Wagyu brisket and jumbo king prawns, lemongrass and coconut dressing with sides of Vietnamese coleslaw and curly fries (because fries!).

The prawns deserve a picture of their own. Just the right amount of bite without overpowering the delicious prawn flavour.I ate way too much food but it was all sooo good. Main meals range in price from $23-$38 so it isn’t a cheap option but if you are looking for really great food, a fun atmosphere and are happy to pay a bit extra then this is a fabulous venue. Moving on from the food, Papi Chulo is nestled into Manly Wharf so you have a view over the water. The decor in the restaurant is beautiful and there was a mix of groups, couples and families when we were there. There isn’t heaps of room for prams but the staff are really accommodating if you do need to bring one. We had a lovely walk down along the beach after lunch (excuse the hair, it was a bit windy). is also just a short walk away if you are looking for another activity for the kids Papi Chulo is located at 22-23 Manly Wharf, Manly. You can find the menus, opening hours and booking details on their website .
