The project is expected to take two years. "We view waste as just a resource out of place," said David Tulauskas, GM's sustainability director, in a statement. "This reuse program enables us to reduce our environmental footprint while making a positive contribution to our community." So far, GM has diverted 550 tons of office materials from the landfill through the rePurpose program, equal to growing nearly 46,000 tree seedlings for 10 years or offsetting electricity use from nearly 250 homes for one year. The recycling partnership stems from GM's decision to award its office furniture contract to Herman Miller, as part of an $1 billion upgrade of its Warren Technical Center campus. Some of the furniture will go to Cody High School, a Detroit school GM has been closely involved over the last six years. In addition to furniture and equipment, employee volunteers from GM, Herman Miller and Green Standards will undertake a three-room makeover to enhance the educational learning experience of students and faculty.
The rooms are scheduled to be completed next spring. Nearly 8.5 million tons of office assets end up in landfills in the U.S. annually, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency. The Herman Miller rePurpose program diverts 99 percent of product from landfills. Since it began in 2009, the Herman Miller rePurpose program has kept more than 27,000 tons of product from landfill and generated $18 million in charitable in-kind donations, according to the Zeeland furniture-maker.St. Vincent de Paul provides prompt courteous free pick up service at your home, business, church or school in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair, Lapeer, and Monroe counties.
