The country singer’s  The Voice  blind audition aired Tuesday night (Sept. 20), and fans got to see all four of the coaches vying for him as a team member. Gilman’s cover of Adele‘s “When We Were Young” impressed all four of the TV singing competition’s Season 11 judges. Adam Levine was the first to turn his chair around, with Miley Cyrus following shortly thereafter and Blake Shelton and Alicia Keys turning around at the very end. And once Gilman introduced himself to the coaches, they started to recognize him from his childhood career.

“I know Billy,” Shelton said, sharing that Gilman’s hit “One Voice” came out during the time when Shelton was making his debut album. “You always wonder whatever happened to somebody, you know? Now you’ve found your sound and where you belong musically.” Cyrus, meanwhile, recalled one of Gilman’s music videos — and Gilman shared that he opened up for her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. She pleaded with Gilman, “Let me take care of you!” noting that she’s familiar with having to reinvent yourself and, therefore, would be the perfect coach … but Levine was keen on getting Gilman for himself, too, and put up a strong fight against Cyrus. Gilman skyrocketed to stardom following the release of “One Voice,” his debut single, in 2000; he was 11 years old at the time, making him the youngest country artist to ever earn a Top 40 hit. Gilman’s album of the same name earned double-platinum status, but his following singles and albums did not achieve the same level of success.

In November of 2014, Gilman revealed that he is gay — and called out the country music industry to support LGBTQ artists. “I’ve never been so nervous in my life,” Gilman admitted as he prepared to pick his coach — but, in the end, he settled on Levine. It also had the two coaches in a heated argument on the state of country music. Levine swiftly turned his chair around after hearing just one line from Wakefield, who was on stage performing with his guitar. Meanwhile, midway through the chorus Shelton turned his chair, much to Levine’s frustration. “Finally there’s going to be a studly Adam on the show,” Shelton jokes. “Like a manly Adam on this show.” While Pharrell Williams didn’t turn his big, red chair around, he was impressed with the Nashville artist, remarking, “You were doing some really, really interesting runs and I’m so glad someone like you is on this show.” Levine then stressed that he turned his chair around right away. “I heard things other than country in your voice,” he notes. “I heard Southern rock, I heard the blues and I think a strong male country leaning singer with a minor in rock & roll fits on anybody’s team and I want you so desperately on mine.” Shelton had his turn to wave about Wakefield while giving a dig to Levine.

“The reason it took me longer to hit my button is ’cause Adam doesn’t realize that’s a George Jones song that Chris Stapleton covered and Chris Stapleton took the melody and changed it,” Shelton says. “I thought, ‘I gotta hear what this guy does with this chorus.’ By the way, country is not always about exactly what you sound like but it’s about what you want to represent with your music. It’s guys like you that get me so excited about the future of Nashville. Levine then questioned why country music gets its own club. “Music reaches millions and millions of people all over the world,” he says. “It’s not supposed to be in a box. I don’t think it matters. I think you should pick me because I want you more.” “I’m not sick of the fact that it’s this exclusive club,” Shelton argues. “It’s up to us as country artists to protect who’s in that club otherwise it gets too far away of what the heart and soul is of country music.
