Even after gut-renovating her 4,600-square-foot co-op on Chicago’s Gold Coast several years ago, she continues to finesse and fine-tune the space—with no plans to stop. In the past few months alone, the furnishings impresario has repainted the living and dining rooms and raised the former’s custom-made Vladimir Kagan sofa an inch and a half.

“It always kind of sank into the bay window back there, and the light came in too bright,” Hunt explains, her honey-tone drawl betraying her Texas roots. “It’s amazing the difference an inch makes, whether in the design of a chair or a room.” Spontaneous mini-makeovers are relatively easy to pull off for Hunt, the founder and CEO of a 33-year-old interiors empire with ten showrooms that offer not only her own furniture and Great Plains textiles but also the work of such talents as Ralph Rucci, Paul Mathieu , and Christian Astuguevieille. “Things always evolve,” Hunt says of her home. “I’ll realize something’s not exactly right, but I’m not sure what. Then one day I walk in and know just what to do.” That’s a very different process, she admits, from crafting interiors for others, which she does very selectively. Case in point: En route home from a recent trip to London, she used the layover in New York to go see a painting she’d been considering. “I can’t buy from photos,” she says. In nearly every room robust artworks mix with strongly sculptural furnishings that span a range of styles and eras. An intricate wood assemblage by Louise Nevelson cohabits comfortably with a Ming dynasty urn in the living room, for instance, while exuberant Frank Stella collages meet lithe Rose Tarlow armchairs with curvy wood backrests in the home office. This compellingly eclectic scheme enjoys abundant space to shine thanks to the generous scale of the building, a 1914 Beaux Arts landmark by architect Benjamin Marshall, who played an instrumental role in developing the surrounding East Lake Shore Drive historic district.
