The comfort that a rocking chair provides depends on motion, and that motion also works the joints loose, causing the chair eventually to begin squeaking. That's one possible explanation for the irritating noise your chair is making while you're trying to relax in it. Another is that the runners are rubbing against the hardwood floor, and a third is that it's the floor itself that's squeaking, not the chair. A squeaking floor isn't an easy fix, but if the squeaking is coming from your chair, you just have to tighten or reglue the joints. Move the chair from side to side while no one is sitting in it. If there is play, it means the joints are loose. If the chair doesn't move much, however, the squeaking may be coming from the motion of the rockers against the floor. You can stop this by affixing rubber shelf lining to the bottoms of the rockers with carpenter's glue.

Turn the chair over, and move it again from side to side if the problem is loose joints. Determine which of the joints are loose by noting which parts of the chair move. Tighten any screws holding joints together with a screwdriver if there are screws to tighten. Rocking chairs with thick, rectangular spindles are often held together with hardware. Don't overtighten the screws. If you can't get one tight enough to stop the squeaking, replace it with a slightly larger one. Reglue loose glue joints. To do this, you may have to knock a section of the chair apart. Use a rubber mallet to do this to avoid damaging the wood. If any joint doesn't separate after repeated tapping with the hammer, wrap a damp rag around it and wait for several hours for the water to soften the glue, then try again. Clean the old glue off the ends of all the spindles and braces that you separate with 120-grit sandpaper. Spread fresh carpenter's glue on each one, and reconnect the joint. Clamp the chair together with bar clamps or straps, and leave it until the glue dries, which takes about 12 hours.

When you remove the clamps, the chair should be squeak-free.
