old church chairs londonAfter a while the joints become loose, the seat worn and the legs so weak that it's useful life as a chair is over. That's when it's time for a ladder-back to start a whole new life as another type of useful or decorative object.

Towel Rack Cut the back off of a ladder chair, paint it to match your decor and hang in the bathroom or kitchen as a towel rack. Each rung on the back of the chair can hold a towel. Attach cup hooks at the top or bottom to hang washcloths or oven mitts. Use long screws or place a small block of wood between the back of the chair and the wall to create some space for the towels. Bench A pair of ladder-back chairs can be turned into a simple bench by facing them toward each other and attaching a plank between them. The plank can be upholstered for use in a bedroom, entry or hallway, or simply painted or varnished for outdoor use. Leave the ladder backs tall for a striking, architectural look, or trim them down by a few rungs for more typical bench ends. A shabby chic paint job, that leaves the bench looking distressed is a great way to finish it. A coat of white paint or a single bright color can also give the chairs a fresh, modern look. Planter Remove the seat from a ladder-back chair and replace it with a basket filled with small herb or flower pots to create a charming planter.

Or cut a hole in the center of the seat and insert a clay pot. Use brackets or painted plywood underneath the pot to support it. Plant flowers, or for a cottage look, a small vine like ivy, sweet pea or morning glory that can twine up the tall back. Place the re-purposed chair in the garden and use it to grow green beans, peas or cherry tomatoes. Display Shelf Remove the legs and cut off about two-thirds of the seat. Flip the chair back upside down and you'll have a shelf at the top with a couple rods at the bottom. Attach wood pieces to the dowels to form additional shelves, or leave them as-is and hang items from them. Sand the edges and paint or stain the chair. Hang it in the dining room and display your favorite china on top, with hand-stitched napkins or table runners displayed hanging from the dowels. Or, hang it in the breakfast nook with a vintage coffee set on the shelf and small potted plants hanging from the dowels. Photo Credits Hemera Technologies/PhotoObjects.net/Getty Images
