ikea dining chair hack

Until March I didn’t have a kitchen table. The small kitchen in my studio had a counter with 2 Ikea stools. Then The Boyfriend and I had a grand idea to get an apartment with an actual dining area. The Boyfriend’s mom, K, gave us a lovely pedestal table (stay tuned for that re-do) and I had 3 sad Ikea folding chairs, first bought in 2009 when I moved to Brooklyn that we set around it. Recently, I found 4 Ikea chairs for sale on Craigslist. $50 for all four. They had really ugly slip covers and a 1/2 inch of foam on each surface, but those parts were easy enough to put in the trash and forget about. This is the blank canvas I was left with. I started with the frame.  I got some lovely nickel spray paint. Asked K very nicely to use her backyard (our condo isn’t a fan of spray painting projects, who would have thought?), and set up. Notice I made sure to unscrew the seats before painting. I started with Krylon and the cover was less than great. I switched over to Rust-Oleum and it covered much better with a slight glint.
I had never spray painted furniture before. This is one of those situations where I hope you let me mess up for you. Apparently, there is technique to spray painting! Honestly, I thought I just had to coat and go. I had no more paint. Thankfully, K came to the rescue. We got more paint. We sanded off the drips and the grass that stuck to the drips when I put the chairs in the grass to dry (I seriously messed these chairs up). K demonstrated a technique completely opposite from what I was doing and 100% better. Don’t worry about coverage. Do light passes over the surface. Lighter than you think is light. After a few coats you can spot check any missed areas. THANK YOU K FOR SAVING MY CHAIRS! While chairs dried, we went to the G Street Fabrics to search the upholstery remnant table. And by table, I mean 4-6 tables piled 3 feet high with remnants. The fabric I bought was marked $4 a yard down from $30. You can’t do better than that! I wanted something neutral that I could mix and match my table cloth to.
I wanted comfy dining chairs, so I bought 2 inch foam, measured the seats I had removed, and cut the foam to the size. I didn’t have electric knife, but a serrated knife worked surprisingly well. Just be prepared to have foam pieces everywhere. It makes a bit of a mess. Next, I centered the foam on the fabric, making sure the pattern went in the direction I wanted and placed the seat on top of the foam. I used a staple gun to upholster the fabric to the straw seat. You could also use glue to affix the foam to the seat and then staple. A problem was found when we set the cushions on the chair. The 1 1/2 inch straw seat plus the 2 inch cushion. Looked awkward and strange. I have short legs and there was NO way my feet were touching the flour in these. We went to Home Depot and had them cut some MDF to size. They’ll cut it for free if you buy the materials from them. It was really inexpensive. They fit the chairs perfectly. I repeated the upholstery process, removing the straw seats and replacing them with the MDF.
The original screws had been inserted into the straw, so we used a drill to replace the screws through the MDF. The Boyfriend helped with this while I held the cushions in place. And with that, the chairs were FINALLY done, I put some foam pads on the bottom of the legs to prevent scratching.
