There was a string of Fawlty Towers-style horrors in the family’s all inclusive hotel in Corfu. Tim Sheppard and his partner Hayley Palk went away with their two children for a half-term holiday
Cubes of butter floating in water with ice cubes at the all-inclusive buffet Mouldy and dirty chairs around the pool in the resort on the Greek island This is what the family were expecting to see when they arrived Nurse Tim Sheppard, 41, had been promised an ”amazing beachfront setting, fantastic pool areas, and gorgeous beach” in a brochure when he booked a week’s trip to the Aquila Sandy Beach Resort for the half-term holiday. But instead he, partner Hayley Palk, 48, and his two children Eloise, seven, and Amber, five, got the hotel from hell at the end of the season – with most of the nine bars and restaurants shut down. Their trip featured mouldy sun beds, green slime in the swimming pool, broken drains, litter strewn beach, rubbish stacked in corridors and a cracked and splintered entertainment stage. Tim, 41, from Exeter showed off horror pictures of his £2,200 trip – booked through travel giants Thomas Cook and said: ”If we had been offered another hotel then we would have taken it in a heartbeat.
”It was clear it was closing down due to the end of season but it was closing down while we were still there. The family found much of the resort to be shut down and they were unable to use some of the facilities The food serving areas were full of dirty water Tim said it was obvious the hotel and resort was in the process of closing down at the end of the season “The restaurants weren’t open, the water cooler was disconnected and the place was a tip. Even the kids disco was off because the stage was cracked and had splinters. ”It was an absolute health hazard. There were so many areas where things were broken or had holes in where my children or even adults could have twisted or broken their foot. ”When we booked all inclusive we didn’t think it included all the health hazards and the rubbish. Even though we had paid for all-inclusive we ended up eating out three nights in one of the open restaurants in the town – because there wasn’t any open in the hotel.
”It was an absolute joke, staff wouldn’t lift a finger to help and Thomas Cook weren’t much better in dealing with it. It was a disaster.” STICK THAT UP YOUR PARIS UP FOR THE FIGHT 'SHE LOOKED SO BEAUTIFUL' The family had flown from Bristol Airport on October 24 with the resort brochure promising two a la carte restaurants and three others with four bars. Promotional blurb for the 640 room hotel says: ”You’ll soon realise that a holiday is all about bonding and re-uniting, adults having time for themselves, playing with their children, or simply watching them splash about in one of the swimming pools or having fun at the kids club. ”Located right on the beautiful sandy beach, you will definitely have no problems finding a spot for your beach towel. The resort really does have something for everyone.” However, when they arrived the two a la carte restaurants had already closed for the season and one of the other restaurants closed four days into the holiday.
“By day three, two out of the four bars closed and by day four the children’s entertainment ground to a halt. Tim said: “I was told that the resort had everything on it that we would need, and that it was a ‘desirable resort complex’ and just one look at the brochure seemed to suggest it looked amazing. ”But as soon as we got there we realised it wasn’t quite what we were expecting. Our room wasn’t ready and we had to wait two hours before we would go to them. The pool was not clean and looked very different from the brochure Many of the restaurants and bars in the resort were closed, which meant the family had to eat out despite already paying for meals Having been used all summer the sun loungers were dirty and seemed to have mould growing on them "When we eventually could go to our room there were empty linen trolleys everywhere and the room looked run down and desperately needed a lick of paint. "It was a room for a 2.2 family yet there was only a double bed and a single bed.
''A maid brought in a camper bed but to get to the balcony you had to climb over all three of the beds. "I spoke to the manager but I was kept waiting for 90 minutes - when someone did see me, he was in my face and threatened to kick us out. "The pools also had green slime everywhere, all around it, there was black mould on the floor and when you stood on the area around the pool it was all slimy. In the area by the beach there was just rubbish everywhere it was like a council tip. "The Thomas Cook rep said she would get back to me but no one turned up for our meetings. "Presumably she had finished for the season, gone home and there was no one to cover for her. ''For that last few days of the holiday we were almost hiding from the staff because we were worried that the manager was going to kick us out for complaining. It was absolutely shambolic. "On the morning of our flight we weren't offered any hot food, just hard stale bread that had been left out and fruit that had been covered and refrigerated.
