Kilbourne conducted an experiment last year with college students who used exercise balls as chairs and reported their results earlier this year. The study overwhelmingly indicated a preference for ball chairs. There was also at least a perception that they improved concentration and focus, said Kilbourne, who says he is contacted every week by educators who want to use ball chairs. "When you look at what schools are spending on desks and chairs ... they're pretty cost-effective," he said. Modified ball chairs with wheels, feet and backs can cost up to $100, but typical exercise balls cost $15 to $40.

Principal Pam George of Lincoln Junior High School in Naperville, Illinois, said that's one of the reasons they are pleased with the ball chairs. They have about 50.
