It opened in 1959 as the Time & Life Building, designed by architect Wallace Harrison, of Harrison, Abramovitz, and Harris. 1271 Avenue of the Americas was the first of four in Rockefeller Center designed by Harrison, Abramovitz, & Harris on the west side of Sixth Avenue. Harris served as the building's project manager and was responsible for overall planning. The Time & Life Building was the first expansion of Rockefeller Center west of the Avenue of the Americas. Air rights were purchased from the Roxy Theatre to the west. The Roxy was torn down in 1960 to erect an office tower connected to the Time & Life Building. The building is clad in green glass and features column-free floors of 28,000 square feet (2,600 m2). Large murals by Josef Albers and Fritz Glarner adorn its lobby, which integrates a serpentine patterned sidewalk design found on the sidewalks of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach with the adjacent sidewalk, [2] a salute to its location on The Avenue of the Americas.

The restaurant was operated by Restaurant Associates, which also operated The Four Seasons Restaurant, La Fonda del Sol, The Rainbow Room, The Forum of the Twelve Caesars, and later Windows on the World. The Hemisphere Club closed some time after 1991.

La Fonda del Sol was a Latin American–themed restaurant opened in the Time & Life Building's lobby by Joseph Baum in 1960. Ok, so maybe it’s not that dramatic but it is pretty cool :) By the way, I’m still styling the picture ledges so ignore them for now and focus on the elegant "Eames" I'm never going to part with :) I was casually browsing Craigslist when I spotted an Eames-like lounge chair. The listing was 2 days old when I saw it so I kind of figured that the chair wouldn’t be available (Mid Century stuff sells fast out here). I sent an e-mail anyway, crossed all the things, and hoped for the best. I didn’t hear back from the seller but I kept stalking the ad…because I’m insane determined. I noticed the ad was still being updated and renewed so I sent another e-mail. I e-mailed the seller 3 more times (each e-mail received no response) before enlisting my husband to e-mail them as well. Before we go on, you should probably know that I’ve wanted an Eames chair for a long time but I'm well aware of the fact that there’s never going to be a time in my life when I can afford the real thing (I'm totally ok with that by the way!) so I’ve always kept an eye out for a nice knockoff which is why I was relentless in pursing this one.

Anyway, I couldn’t understand why the ad was still up when no one was getting back to me! I thought that the seller may have typed their e-mail address wrong when they made the listing to I decided to get creative. I put together a wanted ad basically begging the seller to contact me so I could buy their chair: I figured my ad would be flagged and taken down before the seller ever saw it but I also figured I didn’t have anything to lose so I went ahead and posted it. And then I waited. As luck would have it, the seller e-mailed me 3 days after I posted the ad saying she was so thankful she saw it because all of the e-mails I (and other’s) had sent were going to spam. I couldn’t believe it! Sidenote: that table isn't staying there! I just needed something to fill the photo with so it wasn't so empty on the right side of the chair. The chair of my dreams is home with me because I took a chance and posted that ad! Excuse me while I do another happy dance! The leather is the the perfect caramel color and is in pretty great condition considering its age!
