Master & Dynamic’s niche in the oh-so-specialized audiophile world: headphones for creative workers. The MW60’s got all the retro stylings that made its original cans such a hit with the artsy crowd, plus that rarefied quality: freedom. They’re wireless, with an aluminum Bluetooth antenna that delivers serious range. Unplug and get down to business. Master & Dynamic MW60 “Taccia” means silent in Italian, which makes it something of a misnomer for a lamp with such loud looks. Brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed this distinctive table lamp in 1962, modeling it after an upside down pendant. Place the glass bowl atop the silver body and polished-steel base and you’ve got a gorgeous, diffuse light to illuminate the room. Berlin designer Sebastian Scherer created this tessellated table with just a few panes of colored glass and some ultrapowerful glue. The effect is extraordinary: Depending on your line of sight, the panes overlap to effect the illusion of cubes floating above your living room floor.

The style is just retro enough to give off a hip utilitarian vibe. And the double-rivet attachment points reinforced with nickel will help them survive the inevitable sitting-on.

The Okamura Production System (OPS) is based on the Toyota Production System (TPS) and is Okamura's own developed production method. The Okamura Group views OPS as an ongoing activity in which all employees participate. OPS improvement activities are aimed at enhancing productivity and eliminating the wasting of resources and energy. Origin of our seating manufacture Our origins: The spirit of the artisan Our company was started by people who had been involved in the development of Japanese aircraft. In the latter half of the 1940s, they took sheet-metal technology developed in aircraft production and applied it to the production of steel furniture, primarily pipe furniture such as garden tables and chairs.

Application of ergonomics to chairs With the goal of creating a better chair, we incorporated scientific knowledge into our development in 1961. The result was the Type-22, our first chair created by applying ergonomic principles. It came to be widely used in Japanese offices and became Okamura’s first long-selling product. Introduction of ankle tilt reclining Continuing our research into the relationship between people and chairs, we developed the ankle tilt reclining mechanism. A chair incorporating that mechanism, the FC-9 chair, was then produced in 1992. As a mechanism enabling optimum sitting comfort while reclining, ankle tilt reclining was also adopted on subsequent chairs. Realization of refined styling and advanced engineering We are taking a variety of initiatives in order to deliver even better chairs to people everywhere. For example, to achieve more refined styling, we have produced a number of chairs, including the Okamura CP, in a collaboration with the world-renowned Italian product design firm Giugiaro Design.

In our quest to develop ever more innovative chairs, we are experimenting with a variety of collaborations. Research into sitting comfort using mannequins Building on our collaboration in the design and production of a research laboratory experimental chair in 1960, starting in 1961 we began research into muscle-fatigue measurement and body-pressure analysis by providing various types of experimental chairs and by sponsoring research. At that time, we succeeded in obtaining body-pressure distribution charts, muscle activity graphs and other data by taking a scientific approach to sitting comfort. Application of scientific measurement and design We carry out scientific measurements of conditions when a person sits in a chair, and using computer analysis, we apply the data to chair design. Pursuit of ideal Sitting Comfort with a Seating Simulator In our museum we are demonstrating with an “Ergonomic Seating Simulator” to let people feel comfortable in our ideal seating products.

Measuring the distribution of pressure of different body parts (body pressure distribution) when a person sits on a chair allows us to precisely check our ordinary seating posture with measured diagnostic data on a real-time basis. In addition, the various requirements of ideal chairs, which are suitable for the functionality and appearance of the respective clients, may be displayed on the screen by adjusting the height and depth of the seat face, the seat’s reclining angle and other factors. Pursuit of Safety and Durability We confirm the quality and safety of products by conducting repeated durability and performance tests under in-house standards stricter than JIS or other industry standards. That way, customers can use our products for a long time with peace of mind. Okamura adopted early on the ankle-centered Ankle Tilt reclining method, which achieves a more natural relaxed posture based on ergonomic principles. That and Multiple Density Cushion, for which five years were spent in materials development, give seating comfort in a class above traditional seats.
