It’s also the foundation upon which Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams built their furnishings company 25 years ago. The concept of comfort is so essential to the founders that the address for the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams headquarters is One Comfortable Place, Taylorsville, N.C. During a recent stop at their South Coast Plaza Village store in Santa Ana to celebrate their quarter-century anniversary, Gold and Williams said their commitment to comfortable furniture is unwavering, even as their shops have doubled in number and the breadth of design styles they offer has expanded to include more high-glam looks.
At the store, they signed copies of their latest book, “Who We Are,” a commemorative tome by Assouline Publishing in which they wrote: “Everything we design is something we would want – or already have in our homes. Think serene settings perfect for entertaining or simply curling up with a book. Graceful silhouettes that are easy on the eye and the tush. Washable slipcovers and fabrics that even kids with sticky fingers can appreciate.” Marrying comfort with upscale design is important to them, so the look of their collections is what they both call the “sweet spot between fashion forward and always in vogue.” The Register caught up with Gold and Williams during their Orange County visit. Here are highlights from that conversation: Orange County Register: The last time we had a conversation – in 2010 – you had just opened your Costa Mesa store, and the U.S. was in the midst of a recession. How have things changed for the company since then? Mitchell Gold: The economy has definitely improved, in spite of what some politicians running for office say.
Consumer confidence is dramatically different than it was five years ago. Our business is really good and it’s really exciting. This store is 30 percent ahead of last year. OCR: Where are you seeing this? Bob Williams: We travel all over the country. We’re seeing it not just in the big cities, but also the medium-size cities and even the small cities. OCR: How has consumers’ willingness to shop informed how you design? Are you more willing to take risks? BW: The economy, even when it was bad, didn’t necessarily affect our designs directly, but it did influence our color palette. Our palette was much more subdued and much more cautious. Now that the economy is better and some people are feeling happier, the fabrics have gotten a little bit happy, a little bit brighter. People are a little bit more bold in their choices. MG: A little more glamorous. OCR: How are you showing that glamour in the fall collection? BW: With it being our 25th anniversary, we really wanted to highlight silver.
A lot of our designs for this season incorporate silver: Our case goods have stainless steel, a lot of the fabrics, whether it’s the leather or the metallic threads in the covers, and just giving it a little more sparkle, a bit more shine. It gives it a more glamour feel, a little dressier without being fussy. Because in the past, when you say something is glamorous, or something is traditional, it also came under the whole thing of being fussy. OCR: What’s an example in your collection of glamorous without being fussy? BW: Our Major chair, whether it’s in white or metallic silver. It’s an armless chair with grid tufting. It has a clean, classic, all-American influence in the design, but it’s one of those things that you can sit back and relax on. By itself, it looks very grown-up and very dressy. OCR: What are you influenced by? BW: One of the things we try to do with our collections is to give it an Americana-type feel. But it’s also influenced by a lot of other things just as America has been, whether it’s traditional, from the English perspective, or modern, from France or Italy.
The American feel gives it a casualness that makes it easy to live with. MG: Versus European modern, which often is not comfortable. Ours, we really focus on it being comfortable and inviting. OCR: What are some of the iconic pieces that you think you’ll be carrying in your line for the next 25 years? MG: Alex, our slipcovered chair – we’ve had that for more than 15 years in our line and it continues to be one of our best sellers. We have the Gloria chair, which is a small-scale, button-tufted, very traditional-looking chair that we’ve had for 20 years in our line, and the Major chair we’ve had seven or eight years now and it continues to be classic and best-selling year after year. OCR: Looking back, what was the biggest lesson you’ve learned about designing and making furniture and staying in business for as long as you have? MG: When we started, we just made upholstered dining chairs. We sold them to a lot of people, to Crate and Barrel to J.C. Penney to Levitz and had this big business quickly.
And then, we got hit when J.C. Penney was no longer going to carry our stuff, interestingly, because we weren’t a national brand (at the time) and they wanted companies that made living room, dining room and bedroom furniture, and that wasn’t us. We had a very nice parting – they were very gracious and gave us a year’s worth of business. They were incredibly honorable. But it made us think, “OK, we’re losing a third of our business and what are we going to do?” What we decided to do was just put things in our showroom in High Point that we liked, what was going to be our brand and our name. At that market, word spread like wildfire that there was something going on in our showroom. The top tier of the editors at that time, such as Mary Emmerling, came to the showroom. The best customers came to the showroom. All of sudden, we thought, “If we do what we like, it really resonates with people.” It was very exciting for us. And it was a big lesson – not to try to figure out what someone else will like, but use our taste and what we like.
