Every piece of wood and its’ grain pattern is unique. Because each type of wood has different characteristics, stains applied will affect the wood in different ways and how the stain is applied effects how much of the grain shows through.

Although all wood used in the production of our furniture is kiln-dried to reduce the moisture content, it is a natural product and will take on additional moisture and swell or dry out and crack depending on conditions in an individual’s home. The humidity level in a home should be kept constant. Click button below for a brief description of some of the woods used in the production of furnishings we feature in our showroom. Cherry is grown in the eastern half of North America. Cherry has a moderately hard, strong, closed grain. Light to red-brown, cherry resists warping and checking. It is also one of the more expensive woods. Black cherry is the species most used in product displayed in our store. Walnut grows in many parts of the world including North America, Europe and Asia. Walnut is a strong, hard, durable wood but even with these features, it is not excessively heavy. It is excellent for creating furniture and takes finishes very well. It is light to dark chocolate in colour.

Because only straight grain can be found in the trunk, American black walnut is also one of the more expensive woods. There are 115 different species of maple however, white maple is the main wood used in the furniture we feature. Maple is very hard and its’ diffuse evenly spaced pores give the wood a fine texture. Maple is less expensive than cherry or walnut but it can be finished with stains that come very close to simulating actual cherry. Although oak saw its’ popularity drop a bit in the last few years, it is making a comeback in many more casual designs where its’ knots and imperfections are allowed to shine. A heavy, strong wood, white and red oak are predominantly used in the creation of furniture. Oak has visible rings and large pores which really allow the grain to show through. Although there are approximately 16 different species of ash, white ash is the wood most used in furniture creation. Ash is a hard, heavy, ring porous wood whose grain resembles oak.
