Check collection days for your address.​ Garbage and Household Waste Collection Trash and household waste are collected in 95-gallon containers. The containers may be purchased from the Waste Management divison by calling 385-4650 to schedule delivery or by visiting our office at 3024 Holland Road. Please help us to provide efficient service for you by following these guidelines: Have con​tainers and/or items for pickup at the street between 5:00 p.m. the day prior to your day of collection and 7:00 a.m. the day of collection.

Keep at least 3 feet of clearance between your container and any other item (yard waste bags, limbs, bulky items, mailboxes, cable boxes, or vehicles) including the blue recycle container. Cans that are overflowing will not be collected. The lid should be able to close securely Remove containers from public view at the end of collection day. Clearly label your container with your address and record your container serial number. Loose trash in can should be bagged, to reduce litter. No other garbage will be collected outside of the black can except for yard waste. They weigh the can down, which increase collection and disposal costs. If you don't have a place to use these in your yard, they can be taken to the Virginia Beach Landfill and Resource Recovery Center, where dirt will be used for daily cover and concrete will be crushed into stone for roadbeds, thus reducing operating costs.​ Garbage Can Fee and Warranty ​Black refuse containers (95 gallons) may be purchased from the Waste Management divisio​n for $75.00 each. The containers may be picked up from our office at 3024 Holland Road Monday through Friday from 8:00AM until 5:00PM, or you may call us at 385-4650 to schedule free delivery or to discuss questions regarding older cans. Blue recycling carts are also available for free. Payment must be made by credit card or check or money order made payable to the City Treasurer.  We are unable to accept cash payments. Refuse containers come with a 10 year warranty.  If during that 10 year time frame the container is damaged, we will repair it free of charge. 

The warranty does not cover fire damage or theft. Monday - Friday: 5 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday: 7 a.m. - Noon ​ ​​Recycling in Virginia Beach has never been easier and more convenient. Our state-of-the-art curbside recycling service is designed to be simple. Just put all your household recyclables in your blue container and push it to the curb on your scheduled collection day. Blue recycling containers are provided to residents who receive City provided waste collection. The more residents participate, the greater the benefits to taxpayers. Collection is every other week on your regular waste collection day.  To determine your next recycling collection date, please enter your address in the Recycling & Garbage Collection Lookup section of this page. Please place your recycling container at the curb between 5:00 p.m. the day prior to your day of collection and 7:00 a.m. the day of collection with at least three feet of clearance between it and other carts or vehicles.

Acceptable Rec​​yclable Mat​erial​ Paper: office paper, newspaper, junk mail, magazines, phone books, paper bags Cardboard & Chipboard: flattened, un-waxed, clean & dry​ Plastics Bottles # 1 -7, NO plastic bags. Cartons, incl​uding food and beverage cartons (juice, milk, soy milk, soup, broth, etc.) Glass Bottles & Jars: clear, green & brown; remove & discard lids. ​Metals: aluminum, steel, or tin food & beverage cans; Pour out contents or wipe out cans and bottles. Place recyclables loosely in your container. Townhome residents with the 18-gallon recycling bin container service may place any additional recyclables in paper bags next to their container. Please do not put the following items in your blue cart: ​​Household garbage, waxed cardboard, yard waste (grass, leaves or branches), plastic bags - (plastic bags are collected at most grocery stores for recycling.), plastic toys, plastic pools, plastic motor o​il containers, ceramic or ovenware dishes, Styrofoam, packing peanuts​ Working together, we are making this recycling program successful!

The City of Virginia Beach appreciates your recycling efforts. You are also a partner with the City of Virginia Beach and TFC Recycling Corporation and without you, none of this would be possible. ​​ This service is provided on your normal collection day, and​ does not require a work order.  Residents may place yard debris at curbside for collection by the City as follows: Limbs up to 4 fe​et long and 6 inches in diameter will be collected in a pile not to exceed 4 x 4 x 4 feet. One pile, generated from each house, will be collected on each collection day. You may also dispose of smaller yard debris, such as grass and leaves (no dirt, rocks, mulch or root balls) in up to 25 clear plastic bags, not more than 25 lbs. per bag.​ Tree removal debris is not collected at the curbside. However, it can be collected through the yard debris container program, provided each piece is no larger than 6 inches in diameter. Please note that any work done by private contractors must be disposed of by the contractor.

Residents are urged to place yard debris, as well as waste and recycle containers, outside of the drainage flow line (a few inches away from the curb) to keep the drainage flow line clear and avoid neighborhood flooding. Learn about mulch mowing leaves and grass clippings instead of bagging and dragging them to the curb! Yard Debris Container Pro​gra​​m For larger amounts of yard debris, roll-off containers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is a fee for this service:  $40 for weekdays and $75 for weekends. The containers measure 13 x 7 x 5 feet. The container is only to be used for tree limbs less than 6 inches in diameter, leaves, shrubbery, and grass trimmings from the normal upkeep of the immediate perimeter of your occupied dwelling. Clear plastic bags of leaves and grass should be placed on top. The container is not intended for debris resulting from clearing of large tracts of land (greater than one-half to one acre), limbs larger than 6 inches in diameter, root balls, sod, hazardous waste, stumps, firewood, concrete, dirt, bricks, landscape timbers, pallets, compost, mulch, building materials, bulky items or debris from vacant lots or waterways.
