Medline’s appointment as CEO follows the ouster of grocery veteran Marc Poulin from his position as Empire CEO in the same month Medline made his exit from Canadian Tire last year. Poulin left the grocery retailer after a botched integration of the Western Canadian Safeway chain close to three years after its $5.9 billion purchase and after Empire reported a staggering $2.13 billion net loss for fiscal 2016.
The company also took third and fourth quarter impairment charges last year which amounted to half of the purchase price of the entire Western Canadian chain. Until now Poulin had been replaced on an interim basis at Empire by François Vimard, Empire’s former chief financial officer, but the red ink has continued to flow, with the retailer’s adjusted profit plunging 70 per cent in the second quarter ended Nov. 5. Sales fell 2 per cent to $5.9 billion and same-store sales, a retail bellwether stripping out year-over-year changes to square footage, fell 2.6 per cent excluding fuel. In addition to alienating Western Canadian customers after supply chain problems led to empty shelves, the company has been hurt by its lack of a discount banner outside of Ontario, and its strategy to lure customers back into stores with lower shelf prices had not yet achieved the desired traction with customers. Medline will also serve on the board of directors of Empire, the company said, and will continue to work with Vimard and the Empire leadership team to understand the business.
“Michael Medline is an outstanding Canadian retailer who brings a passion for the customer experience and a proven ability to drive strong operating and financial performance within national organizations and across multiple brands,” said James Dickson, Empire’s board chair. “After an extensive international search, the board is unanimous in its determination that Michael is the right choice to create long-term value for all our stakeholders.” While Medline worked in a variety of executive roles at Canadian Tire and its sporting goods division for more than 15 years, he does not have direct experience in grocery retail. During his tenure helming the sporting goods, automotive and housewares giant, Canadian Tire posted solid earnings but Medline reportedly left after disagreeing with the board about the direction and pace of the company’s digital initiatives. Medline was replaced by Canadian Tire’s former CEO Stephen Wetmore from 2009 to 2014, who had remained an active member of the board.
