Prince Charles’s plans to build a “Scottish Poundbury” have reportedly run intro difficulty after it emerged that just 31 homes had been built and its developer had left the project. The Prince of Wales acquired land at Knockroon, near Cumnock, in 2007 as part of a wider £45 million deal to rescue Dumfries House mansion and its antique furniture collection. The Prince of Wales used £20 million of his own charitable foundations’ cash in the Dumfries House acquisition and planned to build up to 770 new homes at Knockroon in a new “sustainable development”, along the lines of his Poundbury estate in Dorchester. But housebuilder Hope Homes, which said it had “designed, built and marketed Knockroon” for the past six years, has confirmed it has now left the project. Original plans for the Knockroon "eco-village" reportedly envisaged that up to 250 homes would be built by 2017. However Hope Homes admitted last year that it had not sold as many houses as anticipated, blaming a slowdown in the wider property market.

Just 31 homes have now been built, of which 30 have been sold. There is also a pizzeria and a dental practice at the site.

A Dumfries House Trust spokesman denied that the economic climate was a reason behind the restructuring, saying: “The new structure will allow The Dumfries House Trust to play a greater part in the development of Knockroon and build on the success of Hope Homes.
